Banderpunch glacier, also spelled as Bandarpoonch or Bandarpunch, lies in Uttarkashi district of Dev Bhoomi Uttarakhand state. 6316 meters above the sea level, Banderpunch glacier feeds river Yamuna through Tons river and river Ganga through river Bhagirathi. River Yamuna originates from Yamunotri glacier which is almost attached to Bandarpunch glacier and river Ganga originates from Gangotri glacier. Banderpunch glacier is 12Km long and sits widely on the slopes of Banderpunch I, Banderpunch II and Khatling peak. Yamunotri glacier, Sworgarohini peak and Kalanag peak are around Bahnderpunch peak and glacier.

In Hindi, Bandar means monkey and punch means tail making the name of Banderpunch glacier the tail of monkey glacier. The legendary story connected to Hanuman, the incarnation of lord Shiva in the form of Monkey to support lord Vishnu to fight with Ravana when he was born as lord Rama, the son of King Dashrath of Ayodhya state in Treta Yuga, during Ramayana age. There is a story of second Pandava Bheema connected to Hanuman in the Hindu holy epic Mahabharata created during Dwapar Yuga. Lord Shiva came on earth in form of Hanuman to test the strength of Bheema and sat leisurely spreading his tail from Hanuman Chatti to Banderpunch. Bheema proud of his strength tried to remove the long spread tail out of his way but was not able to do so. Thus he realized the monkey was not a normal monkey and he surrendered to lord Shiva.

The best time to visit Banderpunch Glacier is from the month March to October escaping the monsoon months to avoid rain, landslide and roadblocks. You will need to be well equipped with heavy woolen clothes and necessary items to walk through snow. Don’t forget the medicines and other accessories that you might need on the trek.

  • Summer: Summer months March to mid-June are considered to be the best time to visit Banderpunch glacier. Trekking through the himalayan region in pleasing sun and calm weather is fun added with spectacular view of the zone.
  • Monsoon: Monsoon destructs the trekking route to Banderpunch glacier. It is better to avoid mid-June to mid-September to escape heavy rainfall, slippery and muddy roads and unwelcome landslide on the route.
