Bagnath Temple, Bageshwar

At an elevation of 1000m from the sea level, Bagnath Temple is located in Bageshwar town at the confluence of Sarayu and Gomti rivers and dedicated to Lord Shiva, who incarnated himself in the form of a Tiger (Bagh) at this place. The Bagnath Temple houses Chaturmukhi Shivling an many other Hindu deities, this temple is one of the most famous Temple in Bageshwar District. This temple exhibits a marvellous architecture with brass bells of different sizes. On the Occasion of Shivratri, many devotees here to take blessings.

History of Bagnath Temple

According to sources Bagnath Temple came in existence since 7th century, present construction of Bagnath Temple in Nagara Style was built up in 1450 by Chand Ruler, Laxmi Chand. Several statues are still there of past 7th century AD to 16th century AD. The Significance of this temple mentioned in Skanda Purana.

According to legends and Hindu scriptures, Bagnath temple is a place where sage Markandeya worshipped for Lord Shiva. Happy and pleased with Sage’s prayer Lord Shiva manifested in Bagh “Tiger” Avtaar and blessed Markandeya with his presence.

There are many festivals celebrated inBagnath temple. In the month of January there is a fair that the temple hosts called as ‘Uttarayani.’ This fair is celebrated on the festival of Makar Sakranti and is very popular especially in Kumaon Region. Many Devotees visited here from far places and celebrate this festival by holy bathing on the confluence of both the beautiful rivers Sarayu and Gomti during dawn time.
