Chandi Devi Temple, Haridwar

Chandi Devi Temple is one of the popular Hindu Temple, dedicated to goddess Chandi Devi situated in Haridwar district of uttarakhand state. Chandi Devi Temple is one of the three Siddh Peethas located in Haridwar and is highly revered by devotees. The temple is situated at the top of Neel Parvat of Shivalik Range and is located at a distance of 4 kilometres from Har ki Pauri. To reach the temple one has to either follow the three kilometre trekking route from Chandighat or can use Cable car option if you want to skip the trek to reach Chandi Devi Temple.

Located at an elevation of 2900 m above the Sea Level, this temple was built in in 1929 by Suchat Singh in his reign as the King of Kashmir. However, the main murti of Chandi Devi at the temple is said to be structured by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century, one of the greatest priests of Hindu religion. Chandi Devi Temple is known for one of the ancient temples in India. Thousands of devotee’s visit every year, especially during Navratras, Chandi Chaudas and Kumbh Mela in Haridwar to seek the blessings of the goddess and wishes as it is believed that goddess Chandi will fulfil their all wishes. History of Chandi Devi Temple

As per Hindu Scripts and according to legends, two Demons named as Shumbha and Nishumbha attacked and captured the kingdom of Lord Indra. After intense prayer of gods.  Goddess Chandika emerged from Parvati. Attractedand amazed by her beauty, Shumbha desired to marry her. On being refused, Shumbha sent his demon chiefs Chanda and Munda to kill her. Chandika Devi created Goddes Chamunda Avtaar (anger form of Goddess Chandika) and killed Chand Mund and then Shumbh Nishumbh. This Battle is said to believed took place is Neel Parvat, Chandi Devi Temple is built is that same place.

Chandi Devi Temple is around 4 km from main Haridwar city and there is 3km trek from main entry to Shrine. If you are physically fit you can go for trekking way. Another option is rope-way service known as Chandi Devi Udankhatola was introduced for the benefit of the pilgrims those who are old aged or unfit to trek.
