Kartik Swami Temple – Only Lord Kartikeya Temple in Uttarkhand

Kartik Swami is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Kartikeya, the son of Lord Shiva and Parvati. It is located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, India, at an altitude of 3,100 meters above sea level. The temple is located on a hill and offers stunning views of the Himalayan peaks such as Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Bandarpunch.

The temple is accessible via a 3 km trek from the village of Kanakchauri, which is located around 38 km from the town of Rudraprayag. The trek is relatively easy and passes through scenic forests and meadows. The temple is open throughout the year, but the best time to visit is from April to November when the weather is pleasant.

Apart from the temple, Kartik Swami is also known for its scenic beauty and stunning views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks. Many trekkers and nature enthusiasts visit Kartik Swami to enjoy the natural beauty of the region. There are also several camping sites near the temple where you can stay overnight and enjoy the starry night sky.

 

History of Kartik Swami Temple

While there are many legends about this temple, the most popular one dates back to the era when Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati's two sons - Lord Kartikeya and Lord Ganesha –They both were asked to circumambulate the universe seven times. Lord Kartikeya set off on the expedition, undertaking the challenging task of taking seven rounds of the universe, whereas, Lord Ganesha took rounds of his parents, referring to them as his universe. When Lord Kartikeya returned and learnt of how Lord Ganesha had completed the task and won the appreciation of his Parents, he got Angry. The Puranas say that an angry Lord Kartikeya left Kailash, his parents' abode, and arrived at Kronch Parvat. Some legends say, Lord Kartikeya was so furious, he sacrificed his physical self at Kronch Parvat to appease his parents.

The temple sits atop the mountain, 180 degree panoramic view of Himalaya peaks will surely heal inside of you. When it rains, the ambience becomes surreal and it seems the temple is rising from the clouds. A 3 km trek from Kanakchauri village and ending with an 80-step-climb leads to the temple adorned with thousands of bells. It is believed that offering a bell here on Kartik Purnima can make one's wishes come true. Sandhya Aarti or evening prayer, enchantment of mantras and Maha-bhandara or grand feast organised at the temple occasionally is a special attraction for devotees and tourists from different parts of our Country. .During Winters Kartik Swami temple covers with snow blanket that gives devotees and tourist amazing experience.

The Kartik Swami trek from Rishikesh can be done in 2 days. Here is the day-wise trek route:

 

Day 1: Rishikesh to Kanakchauri

Start early in the morning from Rishikesh and drive to Kanakchauri, which is the starting point of the trek. It takes around 6-7 hours to reach Kanakchauri from Rishikesh.

From Kanakchauri, start the trek to Kartik Swami Temple. The trek is around 3 km long and takes around 2-3 hours to complete. The trail passes through dense forests and beautiful meadows, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

After reaching the temple, spend some time exploring the temple and enjoy the scenic beauty of the region.

Overnight stay in a campsite near the temple.

 

Day 2: Kanakchauri to Rishikesh

Wake up early in the morning and enjoy the beautiful sunrise over the Himalayas.

After breakfast, start the descent to Kanakchauri.

From Kanakchauri, drive back to Rishikesh, which takes around 6-7 hours.

Note: The trek to Kartik Swami is relatively easy, but it involves walking on steep and rocky terrain. It's recommended to wear comfortable trekking shoes and carry sufficient water and snacks. It's also advisable to carry warm clothes and rain gear, as the weather in the mountains can be unpredictable. For the Cancellation due to any reasons, Uttarakhand Guide must be notified of the same in writing at uttarakhandguide@gmail.com. At the time we receive your written cancellation statement, refunds policies will be applicable according to following conditions:

 

Cancellation before 30 days from the start of Trip

10 % will be deducted from total

 

Cancellation between 21 to 30 Days from start of Trip

35 % will be deducted

 

Cancellation between 10 to 21 Days from start of Trip

50 % will be deducted

 

Cancellation less than 10 days from start of Trip

No amount will be refunded

 

Note: After the cancellation date, the refund will be handled within 10 working days.

Cancellation fees will be determined based on the total trip cost, and they may vary depending on the date of departure and the date of cancellation.

 

There will be no refunds:

  • For any missed/unused tour services, including meals, owing to any reason.
  • If the tour's services are changed, altered, revised, cancelled, or not used.
  • If a customer cancels or is forced to cancel the tour due to changes in the itinerary or travel
