At an elevation of 3500m above the sea level, Madhyamaheshwar Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is situated in Gaundar Village, Rudraprayag Distrcit of Uttarakhand State. Madhyamaheshwar Temple is one of the Panchkedar Shiva Temples in Garhwal Region, the Middle part of body or belly part or navel of Lord Shiva is worshipped here. The Temple is believed to have been built by the Pandavas of Epic Mahabharata. From Ukhimath, the route passes through Mansoona(7 km), Buruwa(4 km), Ransi (3 km) then Goundar (9 km), Bantoli (2 km) and further 10 km steep climb via Khatra Khal, Maikhumbachatti and kunchatti reach the temple. If you are physically fit and can trek enough (24 km) to reach temple, this will surely your best experience to for exploring Himalayas and Uttarakhand.
History of Madhyamaheshwar Temple, Rudraprayag
According to the legends it is believed that Vyas Rishi told pandavas that they were guilty of killing their own brothers in the war and their sins would be expiated only if Lord Shiva Pardoned those, the Pandavas started on their journey to find Lord Shiva after Kurukshetra war. However, since Lord Shiva was angry about all the deaths, he wanted to avoid them as a result of which he turned into a bull and disappeared in the ground with all his body parts scattered in different places. His hump appeared at Kedarnath, bahu at Tungnath, head at Rudranath, stomach and navels at Madhyamaheshwar and jata at Kalpeshwar. A temple was built by the Pandavas at this place to worship Lord Shiva and please him. The name of the temple has been derived as 'Madh' meaning Middle part of body (Navel) and 'Maheshwar' symbolizing Lord Shiva.
