History of Bageshwar District
According to legends, this temple sits at the site where Lord Shiva had appeared in his tiger (bagh) avatar here to bless sage Markandeya, who had worshipped the deity. The annual Uttarayani fair, which is held on Makar Sankranti at the confluence of river Saryu and Gomti, is a grand affair and is attended by visitors from far and wide. Bageshwar District separated from Almora District after 1997 to give a distinguished indentity. During 1450 A.D. Bageshwar was ruled by the Laxmi Chand, the King of Chand Dynasty. He built the famous Shiva temple known as Baghnath, at the site where sage Markandey greeted Lord Shiva. At present, the temple is revered by many Hindu devotees.
