Bhimtal: One of the Famous Hill Station in Kumaon Region, Uttarakhand

Situated at an altitude of 1370 m Bhimtal is a pretty little hill town in the Lake District of Kumaon in the foothills of the Himalayas. Bhimtal Lake is one of the famous lake cities in Kumaon region. Older than Nainital city, Bhimtal is named after the majestic character of Mahabharata, Bhima.

The major attraction of this place is a small island located in the middle of the lake, which also has a large aquarium on it. Bhimtal beholds exceptional views and vistas of the Mother Nature and is a paradise for nature lovers. The pristine blue lake and several temples across the mountains make it one of the choicest destinations for people who wish to relax, away from the hustle and bustle of the city yet stay closer to it. The Pandavas (of the Mahabharata) are believed to have visited here during their vanvas (forest exile). Local legend tells that when their wife Draupadi was thirsty, Bhima struck the ground with his mace, and water gushed out. The lake that formed was named after him.

From Nainital, you can reach Bhimtal by taking the well-maintained Haldwani-Bhowali-Bhimtal road. You can also reach Bhimtal from other nearby cities such as Haldwani, Almora, and Kathgodam by taking local buses or hiring a taxi.
