Kedartal Trek
The Kedartal trek is one of the most challenging and rewarding treks in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, India. It takes you to the high altitude lake of Kedartal, located at an altitude of 4,750 meters (15,580 feet) above sea level, and offers stunning views of the surrounding snow-capped peaks and glaciers.
The trek begins from the holy town of Gangotri and passes through dense forests of pine and birch trees, high altitude meadows, and steep rocky terrain. The trail is challenging and requires good physical fitness and previous trekking experience. However, the stunning views of the Bhagirathi peaks, the Thalay Sagar peak, and the surrounding glaciers make the effort worthwhile.
The Kedartal Lake is considered sacred by Hindus and is believed to be the home of Lord Shiva. The lake is known for its crystal clear blue waters and the stunning reflections of the surrounding peaks that are visible on its surface. It is also surrounded by lush green meadows, making it a popular destination for camping and overnight stays.
The best time to undertake the Kedartal trek is during the summer months from May to June and then from September to November. The winter months are not suitable for trekking due to heavy snowfall and extreme cold weather. The trek requires a permit from the forest department, which can be obtained from Gangotri.
