Gupt Khal Trek – One of the Challenging Treks in Garhwal

The Gupt Khal Trek is a popular trekking route in Chamoli district, located in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. Gupt Khal Top is situated at an elevation of 5850m above sea level and is one of the difficult treks in Uttarakhand. The route was first discovered by British mountaineer Frank Sydney Smythe (famous for discovering Valley of Flowers) in 1937. He discover route from Valley of Flowers to Mana via Gupt Khal Top, later Ghamshali route found by locals.

Gupt Khal trek takes you through stunning landscapes, including high-altitude meadows, Glacier Rocky zones, Snowfields, and glistening glaciers. Here's some more information about the Gupt Khal Trek:

  • The trek begins in Ghamshali Village (Chamoli Garhwal) and ends in Badrinath, covering a total distance of approximately 100 kilometers.
  • Total days to cover Gupt Khal Trek are approximately 12 to 13 inculding acclimatization.
  • Gupt Khal Trek is one of the toughest treks in Uttarakhand and out of 80 and above attemps, only few of teams can successfully completes the trek.
  • One should be physically fit enough to cover 100 km uphill trek and should know basic knowledge about rock climbing and how to trek in glaciel rocky terrains and snow fields.
  • Only few guides are available for this trek as this trek is less explored so it’s strictly advised to hire experienced, humble and reliable Guide with you.

The Gupt Khal trek is a beautiful trek located in the Chamoli Garhwal Region of Uttarakhand, India. The trek is a difficult level trek and takes around 12-13ssaschi days to complete. Here's a day-wise itinerary for the Gupt Khal trek:

 

Day 1: Dehradun to Joshimath (289 km, 7-8 hours)

Start your Journey to Guptkhal Trek from Dehradun to Joshimath, which is around 289 km at distance. You can use share taxi as well bus to reach Joshimath. Stay overnight in Joshimath and discuss your trekking plans with your guide and poulter.

Day 2: Joshimath to Ghamsali Village (79 km, 2-3 hours)

Start your second day of your Journey to Ghamsali from Joshimath which is around 79 km approx. at distance. Hire taxi to reach Village or can use share taxies. After reaching Ghamsali, set your stuff for trekking.

 

Day 3: Ghamsali Village (3400m) to Eri Udiyar (3880m) (12km, 6 to 7 hours)

You will start your Trek on Day 3 from Ghamsali village to Eri Udiyar which is around 12 km at distance. You will trek along side with Amrit Ganga River. After Reaching Eri udiyar set your tent there to and stay overnight.

 

Day 4: Eri Udiyar (3880m) to Rataban (4300m) (8 km, 5 to 6 hours)

After having breakfast, start your trek to Rataban Campsite from Eri Udiyar which is 8 km at distance. Today you will trek through rocky glaciel terrians which is quite difficult to trek with luggage. After reaching Rataban set your tent nearby water body and stat there for night.

 

Day 5: Rataban (4300m) to Bankund (4500m) (5 km, 4 to 5 hours)
Todays trek will be short in distance as compare to other days, you will trek around 5 kilometers is Glaciel uphill trek to reach Bankund. After reaching, set your tent there and rest overnight there. You can rest a day more for acclimatization.

 

Day 6: Bankund (4500m) to Bankund Bend (4800m) (7-8 km, 6 to 7 hours)

Today's trek takes you to the Bankund Bend from Bandkund Campsite. You will trek uphill thourgh larga glaciers and rocky terrains for today’s campsite. After reaching Bankund Bend, set your tents and stay there overnight.

 

Day 7: Bandkund Bend (4800m) to Garh Snow Field (5260m) (7-8 km, 6 to 7 hours)

Start your day 7 towards early morning to reach Snow Filed. Today you will trek trhough Snow filed which is quite difficult as compare to normal terrain. After covering snowfiled area, set your tents in favourable area and stay overnight there. Prepare your self for extreme cold weather condition as you will trek all way through snow area from Garh Snow Field till Gupt Khal Summit.

 

Day 8: Garh Snow Filed (5260m) to Gupt Khal Base (5700) (5-6 km, 6 to 7 hours)

Start your day 8 trek towards Gupt Khal Base from Garh Snow field. Protect your self from extreme cold snow winds and follow guide properly to trek in snow area. After reaching Gupkhal Base, set your tents there and stay overnight.

 

Day 9: Gupt Khal Base (5700m) to Nakthani Glacier (5075m) via Gupt Khal Summit (5850m) (7-8 km, 7 to 8 hours) – Summit Day

Today you will summit to Gupt Khal Top which is situated at an elevation of 5850m aboce the sea level. Start your trek early morning from Gupt Khal Base Camp to Gupt Khal Top, you will trek through snow trail and last 50 m you have to climb a Rocky 90 degree patch using ropes and rock climbing techniques.You will love to explore beautiful Himalayan peaks like Kagbhushandi Peak, Mana Peaks, Saptrishi peaks etc. After explore Gupt Khal top, start your trek towards Nakthani Glacier campsite. Set your tent there and stay overnight.

 

Day 10: Nakthani Glacier Campsite (5075m) to Musapani Campsite (4130m) (4-5 km, 6 to 7 hours)

Start your Trek towards Musapani Campsite from Nakthani Campsite. Today trek will be easy as compare to other days as you will left Snow area and reach towards meadow area. Set your tent at Musapani Campsite and overnight stay there.

 

Day 11: Musapani Campsite (4130m) to Badrinath (3300m) (17 km, 7 to 8 hours)

This will be the last day of your trek as you will reach to Badrinath from where you can hire taxi. Today you will trek around 17 km to reach Badrinath Valley. After reaching, stay there for overnight.

 

Day 12: Badrinath (3300m) to Dehradun (328km, 9 to 10 hours)

Drive back to Dehradun with sweet memorable moments of Gupt Khal Trek which is around 328 km from Badrinath by road.

The best time to explore Gupt Khal Trek is during the summer and autumn months, from May to mid-October. During this time, the weather is generally clear and dry, and the temperatures are moderate, making it comfortable for trekking.

The summer and autumn months are the best time to explore the flora and fauna of the region. The region is home to several species of plants and animals, including Himalayan Tahr, Himalayan Black Bear, and several species of birds.

During the monsoon season, from July to August, the region receives heavy rainfall, making it difficult to trek. The trails become slippery, and the risk of landslides increases, making it unsafe for trekking. If you are still planning to visit during monsoon season, be update with road and weather conditions

During winters, Gupt Khal trek closes as trek covers with heavy snow that makes trail is impossible to trek for travellers.

  3. At Camps, Bonfire will be provided according to weather conditions.
  4. For the Trek, there is fees for trekking permits and forest campsites.
  5. Trekking Supplies (Tents, Sleeping Bags, Ice Axes, Ropes, etc.)
  6. Expert Trek Leaders will there to Guide (Certified in basic/advanced mountaineering courses)
  7. A skilled trek crew (Guides, Chefs, Assistants, porters/mules) is available.
  8. Protective Gear (First Aid Kit, Medical Kit, Oxygen cylinders (if necessary), stretcher, etc.)
  9. Trek Certificate for Completion.
  10. Basic Survival Techniques in forest by using natural resources etc.

At the time of booking, full payment is required.

For the Cancellation due to any reasons, Uttarakhand Guide must be notified of the same in writing at uttarakhandguide@gmail.com. At the time we receive your written cancellation statement, refunds policies will be applicable according to following conditions:

 

Cancellation before 30 days from the start of Trip

10 % will be deducted from total

 

Cancellation between 21 to 30 Days from start of Trip

35 % will be deducted

 

Cancellation between 10 to 21 Days from start of Trip

50 % will be deducted

 

Cancellation less than 10 days from start of Trip

No amount will be refunded

 

Note: After the cancellation date, the refund will be handled within 10 working days.

Cancellation fees will be determined based on the total trip cost, and they may vary depending on the date of departure and the date of cancellation.

 

There will be no refunds:

  • For any missed/unused tour services, including meals, owing to any reason.
  • If the tour's services are changed, altered, revised, cancelled, or not used.
  • If a customer cancels or is forced to cancel the tour due to changes in the itinerary or travel
