Valley of Flowers Travel Guide 2024

Situated at an altitude of around 3,600 m above the sea level and with a stunning backdrop of the mighty Himalayan ranges, the Valley of Flowers National Park presents an ethereal view and an unforgettable experience for visitors. Spread over an area of 87 sq. km in the Chamoli district, Garhwal Region, Uttarakhand. The Valley of Flowers National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and forms one of the two core zones (the other being the Nanda Devi National Park) of the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve. This Beautiful valley is believed to have been discovered in 1931, when Frank S Smyth and two others British mountaineers – lost their way and chanced upon this spectacular valley. Attracted by the beauty of this place they named it the “Valley of Flowers”.

Valley of Flowers is a destination where nature blooms in full glory offering a breath-taking experience. Exotic flowers over 600 species like orchids, poppies, primulas, marigold, daisies and anemones are an eye-catching spectacle. Sub-alpine forests birch and rhododendron cover parts of the park's area. The trek to the valley offers eye-catching spectacles like cascading waterfalls and wild streams.

Valley of Flowers trek – One of the famous treks in Uttarakhand

Trekking is one of the most adventurous activities that one can ever indulge in for a tourist. It does not just cater to physical fitness but also upholds and promotes mental health. A trek in the Valley of Flowers is the most satisfying and one of the most chosen trek by tourists. Valley of Flower trek starts from Poolna (Last motorable place. Pulna is 4 km from Govindghat, one can start trekking from Govindghat or can easily get shared taxi from govindghat to pulna.

Then 7km trek is the next step from Pulna to Bhyundar Village , this trek will surely excites you with amazing scenic views including cascading waterfalls, Natural and rare herbs and shurbs , beautiful flowers , rough natural trek and happy faces of tourists . Ghangharia is 2km from Bhyundar Village, the base camp for treks to valley of flowers and Hemkund Sahib.

Ghangharia is situated in 3049 m from sea level, the base camp for valley of flower trek. Valley of Flowers is 3.5 km approx. easy trek from Ghangharia and one can cover within 2 to 3 hours easily. The Swift trail will walk past the thick vegetation consisting of the beautiful rare Himalayan Flowers, wild fauna and natural scenic views. Valley of flower is a full of various rare Himalayan birds, insects and butterflies.

Valley of Flowers Travel Tips

  • Valley of Flowers trek is opened to public on 1st June every year. The park remains open from the month of June to October.
  • Valley of Flowers is a world heritage site and therefore you need to enter your names in the register, pay the entry fees accordingly and declare all plastic bottles you are carrying along.
  • Entry to Valley of Flowers opens at 7.00 am every day and last entry is allowed till 2.00 pm. You should start back around 1 pm so as to reach back by 5.00 pm.
  • Carry pair of Socks, trekking stick, Torch, Raincoats, and extra Batteries for your Camera.
  • Though the Valley is beautiful in May, June and September. But for maximum number of flowers in July and August are most preferred months when flowers blooms.
  • Be updated about the weather and road conditions especially during the monsoons, before planning their trip to Valley of Flowers.

Entry Fee for Indian Citizen: 150 INR , additional : 50 INR for each day

Entry Fee for Foreigner Citizen: 600 INR, additional: 250 INR for each day

Detailed Trek Route to Valley of Flowers | Day wise Trek to Valley of Flowers

The Valley of Flowers is located in the Chamoli Garhwal District of Uttarakhand state of India and is a part of the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve. The trek to the Valley of Flowers involves a round trip journey of approximately 20-25 kilometers and typically takes 3-4 days.

Day 1: Joshimath to Govindghat - On the first day of the trek, you will travel by road from Joshimath to Govindghat, which is a distance of approximately 19 km. Govindghat is the starting point for the trek to the Valley of Flowers where you can stay for a day and explore this mini town.

Day 2: Govindghat to Ghangaria - From Govindghat, you will start your trek to Ghangaria, which is the base camp for Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib. The trek from Govindghat to Ghangaria is approximately 14 km and takes about 7-8 hours to complete. You will cross several streams, walk on rocky terrain, and climb steep slopes along the way.

Day 3: Ghangaria to Valley of Flowers - On the third day, you will continue your trek from Ghangaria to the Valley of Flowers, which is approximately a 3 km trek one way. The trek takes about 2-3 hours to complete and involves walking on a well-defined trail. Once you reach the Valley of Flowers, you will be able to explore the area and marvel at the stunning array of flowers in bloom.

Day 4: Valley of Flowers to Ghangaria to Govindghat - On the final day of the trek, you will return to Ghangaria and then make your way back to Govindghat. From there, you can travel back to Joshimath by road.

The best time to visit the Valley of Flowers in Uttarakhand, India is during the months of July to September. This is when the valley is in full bloom with a vibrant carpet of flowers, making it a paradise for nature enthusiasts and photographers.

The valley remains covered in snow during the winter months, and it is inaccessible during this time. As the snow melts and the weather warms up, the flowers start blooming, creating a breathtaking spectacle. The peak blooming period is usually from mid-July to mid-August when the valley is at its most colorful and picturesque.

It's worth noting that the exact timing of the bloom can vary depending on weather conditions and other factors, so it's always a good idea to check the current status before planning your visit. The Valley of Flowers is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is located at an altitude of about 3,500 meters (11,500 feet), so it's advisable to be prepared for high altitude conditions and carry appropriate clothing and gear.

Additionally, the monsoon season in the region starts around mid-June and continues through September. While the flowers are in full bloom during this time, there is also a higher chance of rain and cloud cover. Therefore, it's important to consider the weather conditions and plan accordingly, especially if you want to enjoy clear views of the surrounding mountains and the valley itself.

  5. Trekking Supplies (Tents, Sleeping Bags, Ice Axes, Ropes, etc.)
  6. Expert Trek Leaders will there to Guide (Certified in basic/advanced mountaineering courses)
  7. A skilled trek crew (Guides, Chefs, Assistants, porters/mules) is available.
  8. Protective Gear (First Aid Kit, Medical Kit, Oxygen cylinders (if necessary), stretcher, etc.)
  9. Trek Certificate for Completion.
  10. Basic Survival Techniques in forest by using natural resources etc.

  2. Offloading Fees for Backpacks (Rs.250 Per day/Per bag)
  3. Food on the way to Base and from Pick and Drop

At the time of booking, full payment is required.

For the Cancellation due to any reasons, Uttarakhand Guide must be notified of the same in writing at uttarakhandguide@gmail.com. At the time we receive your written cancellation statement, refunds policies will be applicable according to following conditions:

 

Cancellation before 30 days from the start of Trip

10 % will be deducted from total

 

Cancellation between 21 to 30 Days from start of Trip

35 % will be deducted

 

Cancellation between 10 to 21 Days from start of Trip

50 % will be deducted

 

Cancellation less than 10 days from start of Trip

No amount will be refunded

 

Note: After the cancellation date, the refund will be handled within 10 working days.

Cancellation fees will be determined based on the total trip cost, and they may vary depending on the date of departure and the date of cancellation.

 

There will be no refunds:

  • For any missed/unused tour services, including meals, owing to any reason.
  • If the tour's services are changed, altered, revised, cancelled, or not used.
  • If a customer cancels or is forced to cancel the tour due to changes in the itinerary or travel
