Katarmal Sun Temple, Almora

At an Elevation of 2116 km above sea level, Katarmal Sun Temple – an ancient piece of history lies in the Hills of Kumaon, Almora District, and Uttarakhand. This Temple is one of the famous Sun Temple in India and only sun temple located in the hills. Temple is located around 17 km from main Almora town , a steep 3 km Trek from Almora- Ranikhet  road will definitely excites you to explore this unique temple .

The primary shrine is surrounded by 45 smaller shrines. Besides the statue of Vraddhaditya, the main temple structure also includes statues of other deities. Locally Katarmal Sun Temple is also known as Badaditya temple.

History of Katarmal Sun Temple

The Katarmal Sun Temple was built in the 9th century by the Katyuri kings, a Hindu Rajput dynasty who ruled over the region in that period. Katyuries were responsible for the construction of nearly 400 temples in Uttarakhand alone. This particular temple was built by Katarmalla and is a grand complex featuring a shrine dedicated to the ancient avatar of the sun god known as Burhadita or Vraddhaditya.
