Bageshwar

Bageshwar a town is situated at the confluence of river Saryu and Gomti at an elevation of 1004m in Kumaon Region, Uttarakhand. Bageshwar gets its name from the ancient temple Bagnath of Lord Shiva set in the heart of the town, this temple is visited by devotees in large numbers all year round.

Housing the most beautiful snow-capped Himalayan ranges and mesmerizing rivers, Bageshwar district attracts thousands of tourists from and outside Uttarakhand state. The well-known Himalayan peaks Nanda Devi, Trishul, Nandakot and others boost the beauty and popularity of Bageshwar district.

 

History of Bageshwar District 

According to legends, this temple sits at the site where Lord Shiva had appeared in his tiger (bagh) avatar here to bless sage Markandeya, who had worshipped the deity. The annual Uttarayani fair, which is held on Makar Sankranti at the confluence of river Saryu and Gomti, is a grand affair and is attended by visitors from far and wide. This fair is considered one of Uttarakhand's ancient events

Bageshwar District separated from Almora District after 1997 to give a distinguished indentity. During 1450 A.D. Bageshwar was ruled by the Laxmi Chand, the King of Chand Dynasty. He built the famous Shiva temple known as Baghnath, at the site where sage Markandey greeted Lord Shiva. At present, the temple is revered by many Hindu devotees.
